Living with chronic pain can feel like a life sentence. It creeps into your daily activities, robbing you of joy and freedom. Whether it’s nagging lower back pain, stiff knees, or relentless shoulder aches, many of us have resigned ourselves to accepting this discomfort as part of aging. But what if the key to a pain-free life isn’t in the methods you’ve always relied on—stretching, painkillers, or even invasive treatments—but something entirely different?
In this article, you will learn:

DOES FLEXIBILITY MAKE YOU HAPPIER?
I explore this in-depth in my podcast, Stop Stretching. Episode 1 is available here.
In this podcast, I challenge the traditional belief that stretching is key to relieving pain and improving flexibility. I share my personal journey, moving from chronic pain caused by misunderstood stretching practices to discovering effective techniques for living pain-free through Applied Yoga Anatomy and Muscle Activation (AYAMA). This podcast is for you if you are suffering from nagging or debilitating muscle pain.
In the first episode, I explain why I have concluded that stretching is not good for your body. While many believe that stretching helps against tightness, I show that flexibility is not the key to happiness. I also explain why yoga and stretching do not help to cure tightness and that there is a cheaper and healthier way to become pain-free than choosing therapists and painkillers.
The Stretching Trap: My Painful Journey
I struggled with chronic pain in my back, neck, and knees, worsened by intense yoga and stretching. Despite medication, therapies, and yoga, the pain always returned. At 18, mobility fascinated me, and I thought flexibility was the key to aging gracefully. This led me to yoga, but by 30, intense Ashtanga practices left me in excruciating pain. At 33, a physiotherapist named Eric introduced me to Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT). Transforming my pain from a 9/10 to a manageable 2. I realized and learned lasting relief came not from forcing flexibility but from restoring muscle function and building strength.

The harmful effects of stretching.
For years, I’d believed tightness in my muscles meant I needed to stretch. But Eric introduced me to a new perspective: tightness is a symptom, not the root problem. When muscles tighten, they’re signaling instability in the body. Stretching only addresses the symptom, temporarily alleviating discomfort without resolving the underlying issue.
Katie, a Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) expert, explains it best: “Tightness is a symptom. It’s like taking painkillers for a dehydration headache. You’ve addressed the symptom but not the root cause.” Stretching can even worsen instability, leaving your body more vulnerable to injury.
Discovering AYAMA – Applied Yoga Anatomy + Muscle Activation™: Unlocking Strength Through Muscle Activation (Not Stretching!)
My signature yoga methodology, AYAMA™, focuses on muscle stability, strengthening muscles, and enhancing neuromuscular communication. Unlike traditional approaches that emphasize flexibility, this method prioritizes stability and injury prevention.
AYAMA Core Principles:
- No stretching or emphasis on flexibility.
- Informed sequencing in yoga practices to avoid injuries.
- Improving muscle function by strengthening and stabilizing muscles.
Pain is a warning signal that something isn’t functioning correctly. Forcing muscles to relax through stretching can worsen instability and lead to more injuries.
With this podcast, my goal is to flip the script on stretching and help people become pain-free. I will provide practical advice for living pain-free using AYAMA principles and shift perceptions of flexibility and stretching in yoga practice and beyond.
Steps to a Pain-Free Life
Adopting AYAMA™ principles transformed my yoga practice and life. Here are the core steps to follow for lasting relief:
1. Stop Stretching
Stretching may feel good in the moment, but it often exacerbates instability. Instead, focus on movements that promote muscle activation and stability.
2. Strengthen Stability
Shift your focus from increasing flexibility to building strength and stability. Exercises that activate underperforming muscles will naturally improve your range of motion.
3. Practice Informed Sequencing
When practicing yoga or any movement-based exercise, avoid pushing into extreme positions. Instead, aim for 25-40% of what you think you can do. This prevents injury and ensures you work within your body’s safe range.
4. Address Neuromuscular Communication
Improving the connection between your brain and muscles is crucial. Clear communication makes your body function optimally, reducing pain and preventing injury.
5. Listen to Your Body’s Signals
Pain is a message that something is wrong. Instead of pushing through, ask why your body is responding this way and address the root cause.

Personal Transformation Through AYAMA
When I began incorporating AYAMA principles, the changes were profound. After years of debilitating pain, I was able to hike again. My yoga practice evolved into one that prioritized stability and strength. Within days of implementing AYAMA techniques, my yoga students began reporting dramatic reductions in pain. By day nine of teacher training, they were pain-free.
Why AYAMA Works
Unlike stretching-focused practices, AYAMA builds a foundation of strength and stability. Here’s why it’s so effective:
- Respects Individual Neutral Ranges: AYAMA honors each person’s unique range of motion, avoiding unnecessary strain.
- Targets the Root Cause: By focusing on muscle activation, AYAMA addresses the underlying issues causing pain rather than masking symptoms.
- Supports Natural Biomechanics: Proper muscle function ensures your body moves as designed, preventing compensatory patterns that lead to injury.

The Bigger Picture: Moving Beyond Pain
My journey with AYAMA has not only alleviated my pain but also deepened my understanding of the body’s mechanics. Greg Roskopf, the creator of MAT, emphasizes that “growing old and debilitated isn’t inevitable; it’s a result of stress, trauma, and overuse.” By restoring muscle function, we can defy aging’s limitations.
AYAMA has given me the tools to live pain-free and help others do the same. It’s a journey of self-discovery that goes beyond the mat. It’s about embracing a philosophy that prioritizes strength, stability, and connection.
Your Path to a Pain-Free Life
If you’re ready to leave pain behind, start by questioning the traditional advice around stretching and flexibility.
